VINTAGE PIONEER STEREO AM / FM ANALOG TUNER
PIONEER TX-9100 / TX9100 TUNER
#...739M
Circa 1973-74
Made in Japan
for sale
ü
Our technician has completely gone through
and 'Certified' this unit.
ü We have completely gone through this unit cleaning everything including
all switches, controls and contacts. Extensive cleaning of unit
internally.
ü 'Tuning'
meter had a magnet weld that had failed rendering it
inoperative. Tech disassembled and repaired meter and now
operates properly. Both meters reinstalled
ü Repaired
bent AM toggle switch shaft
ü Switches
/ Selectors (rotary, toggle and slide) were also flooded with
cleaner.
ü
We also aligned the tuner front-end on both AM & FM bands for optimum
performance as older tuner components will have 'drifted' over the
years.
ü
AM
'Stick' ferrite antenna ball and socket inspected for cracks /
chips and none found.
ü
Tuner string checked for
any fraying then re-tensioned to increase traction & relieve
flywheel binding and re-centered pointer to correct dial position
to agree with slide rule scale and tuning capacitor.
ü
Dial
lamps functioning, and due to a low current draw (do not run
particularly 'hot') should last a long time (meters do not have
illumination by design)
ü
Replaced 2x meter lamps (8V / .25A)
ü No
power supply hum of any kind. It's dead silent!
ü All
functions test fine.
ü FM
reception also incredible and IMPECCABLY CLEAN!!! AM
is fairly typical for a stereo tuner (not typically a 'strong
suite' for stereo tuners, and this one is no exception).
ü Following
electro / mechanical work, unit was fully detailed cosmetically,
inside and out.
ü No
power supply hum of any kind. It's dead silent!
All functions test fine. Cosmetics in excellent condition.
Following 10.5 hours of restoration
procedures, the unit was ran continuously for 48 hours.

Very
impressive and classy looking Pioneer TX-9100, AM/FM Stereo
tuner with performance to match. Handsome, 'Blue-Face' with a
'smoked' plexi dial glass. This tuner 'sounds' INCREDIBLE!!! One
of the best tuners we have ever had. Very 'phat' sonics, with
incredible presence and depth. A/B testing with this tuner was
an 'eye opener' for us, and we've heard a lot of gear. From the
original Pioneer TX-9100 tuner's owners manual;
"The FM MPX
Decoder uses the design principle of the 'phase lock loop'
applied in it's circuitry. It has no inductances or capacitances
which can cause phase shifts and distortions. This functions by
any phase dislocation that might occur is automatically detected
and compensated by a loop circuit. This results in an
unprecedented high degree of stability irrespective of
temperature or humidity changes. FM stereo channel separation
always remains sharp and clear-cut throughout the audio
frequency range."
This tuner is very well built, with internal shielding on
EVERYTHING!
VERY impressive specs as well!
Pioneer TX-9100 AM/FM
Stereo Tuner Features:
- Internal
shielding on EVERYTHING (see photo above)
- Weighted flywheel "slide rule" analog tuning
- 'Fully shielded' 8-gang
tuner
- Analog tuning Meter
- Analog Signal Strength Meter
- Stereo indicator lamp
-
Dual Level FM Muting
(separate from Stereo / Mono selector)
-
Separate Variable Output Level controls for AM and FM
-
Stereo 'Auto' / Mono selector (separate from FM muting selector)
-
Pulse noise filter to filter extraneous noise from passing cars,
shavers, blow dryers, etc.
- De-featable
MPX filter
- RCA outputs for FM Multipath Vertical / Horizontal to connect
to an Oscilloscope or to the Pioneer SD-1100 'display unit'.
VERY handy to determine best antenna placement / orientation
- RCA outputs for both 'Fixed' and 'Variable' levels ('Fixed'
level handy for direct connection to a tape recorder or other
recording device, while sending the 'Variable' on to your
amplifier for separate monitoring)
- Built-in AM Ferrite / 'Stick' antenna w/ swivel bracket
- Front Mounted, 1/4" headphone jack with Variable Output level
control
- Rear accessible 'mains' fuse
PIONEER TX-9100 AM/FM TUNER SPECIFICATIONS:

Again, we have
completely gone through this unit. Looks NEAR NEW both inside
and out. This is essentially the tuner that became the Pioneer
TX-9500, but with the 'smoked-blue and Walnut' look of a couple
years previous. Same performance, specs and slightly better
build quality. Cosmetically the wood veneer
case had a ding in the left, front edge and a scratch on the
top. The face has a light scratch on it's top, horizontal edge
and the dial window bezel trim has some of the typical oxidation
we're seeing on much Pioneer gear over the past 10 years or so
(see photos above).
Includes a pdf, 'e' copy, download of the
Pioneer TX-9100
owners / users / instruction manual.
Looks beautiful, works
and sound great! Measures 17" wide x 13.5" deep x 5.5" high and

Very impressive and classy looking Kenwood KT-413, AM/FM Stereo tuner
with performance to match. Handsome, 'Silver-Face' with clean
functions. This tuner 'sounds' INCREDIBLE!!!
Not sure why, but this tuner is one of the best performing tuners we
have listened to in a long time. The ‘Auto-Search’ function works
brilliantly. Very ‘solid’ locking when it finds a station.
‘Station-Lock’ is positive with no detectable drift. This is on BOTH AM
and FM. Very 'phat' sonics, with incredible presence and depth. A/B
testing with this tuner was an 'eye opener' for us, and we've heard a
lot of gear. This tuner is very well built including rotating internal
ferrite rod antenna.
The tuner
preset markers do not function but still work as ‘manual indicators’ to
show where your favorite stations are.
Kenwood KT-413 AM/FM Stereo Tuner Features:
-
Station Preset indicators for AM
and FM - 'Fully shielded' 5 gang tuner - Motorized automatic “Servo Lock” tuning mechanism - Digital Signal Strength Meter - Stereo indicator LED - FM Muting has Auto or Mono selection
- RCA outputs - Built-in AM Ferrite / 'Stick' antenna w/internal rotation via rear

This tuner is in very good condition. Again, we have completely gone
through this unit. Looks NEAR NEW both inside and out.
This tuner has a very selective FM section and
an above average AM section. Much better than most stereo tuners. The tuner preset markers do not function ‘automatically’, but still work
to show where your favorite stations are. Again, I think I can safely
say, it's probably one of the best sounding, most 'musical' tuners,
we've ever heard (and yes, we've been doing this for almost 30 years).

Tuner has had complete service including cleaning everything
including all switches, controls and contacts. Weighted flywheel
assembly was completely disassembled, bushing and axle 'solvent
cleaned', lubed and re-assembled (we are finding that operation,
while time consuming, is becoming more and more necessary on
many 'flywheel' tuners as they're all approaching their
40th-50th birthday. We also aligned the tuner front-end for
optimum AM & FM performance as 20 years and older internal tuner
components have always drifted on vintage gear over the years
and this one had definitely drifted. Pulls stations great now.
All indicator LED's and lamps working fine. No power supply hum
of any kind. It's dead silent! All functions test fine.
Following restoration procedures, the unit was ran continuously
for 48 hours. ____________________________

This tuner is
in fabulous condition. As stated earlier, we have
completely gone through this unit. Looks great both
inside and
out.
Cosmetically, with the exception of some minor 'tics'
on the face, and along the top 'side edge' of the wood case and a few, old scratches from
other gear sitting on top in the past (only really
noticeable when looking 'down from above' the unit. Lemon oil pretty
much hides them from being distracting) the tuner looks
great (see photos above). Also, the plastic 'lock' for the AM stick
antenna was sheared off at sometime in the past (probably because
someone tried to use the AM antenna as a "handle" which is why most gear
has a sticker on the antenna stick that states, "NOT a handle").
Works and sounds great as well!
This
tuner has a very selective FM section and an above average AM section. Much
better than most stereo tuners. This is a
great AM/FM
tuner from 1978-79!

The Colonel does one thing, he "fry's chicken".
Accuphase did one thing, they made "Tuners" (actually they made a
pre-amp and power amp as well, but they're famous for their
"Tuners". Hey the "Colonel" has branched out too).
Very impressive and classy looking
Accuphase T-100, tuner with
performance to match. Brushed aluminum face with matching knobs. Actually
would match many period correct units from McIntosh, such as the
MA-5100, MA-6100 etc.
Accuphase T-100 Features:
-
Great
internal and external build-quality such as super heavy chassis,
- Full size potentiometers
- Edge connected PCB's
- Separate fuse protection for multiple circuits
-Fully-loomed wire
- In-house built transformer
- Weighted flywheel "slide rule" analog tuning with
milled
aluminum knob - 8-gang tuner - Analog tuning Meter - Analog Signal Strength Meter
- Analog

- MPX filter for filtering out the 19kHz pilot tone from FM
broadcasts
- Stereo / Mono selector (separate from FM muting selector)
- Local /
Distance selector
for AM
- LED indicators for "Stereo", "Muting-1", "Muting-2" and "MPX
Filter"
- RCA outputs for FM Multipath Vertical / Horizontal as well as
"Detector Out" ("Detector out" was an accessory
RCA output allowing for future, 'Pre-Discriminator' output of
4-channel / Quad FM, which never happened as far as we know) - Built-in AM
'Bar' Ferrite antenna
on single axis, hinged bracket
- Dimmer selector for 'Incandescent' lamps (no effect on the
LED's...cause they're "LED's".)
- Easy to service. Most of the circuit boards are
connected via multi-pin, edge connectors

First Accuphase tuner we've had in 25 years. This
is an amazing FM tuner (yes, it does AM, but I'm going to assume
you're not buying it for it's "AM" performance, just like you don't
buy a "Class-A Motorhome" because of their gas mileage. Believe me,
I just did that and at 8.5 mpg, I'm quite happy).
Actually, the AM does quite a respectable job. FM
sounds amazing!!!
Again, we have completely gone through this unit. Looks NEAR NEW inside and
with a few obligatory 'battle scars' on the
outside (small tics, nics and striations. Also some finish wear
spots near the hinge, inside the drop down panel. See photos above).
From an original Review circa 1975:
"Behind it's "Clark-Kent-ish" exterior, the T-100 is a Super
Tuner! It was preceded by some advertising and performance claims
that seemed extravagant, but it appears that for once, the adman
speaketh with un-forked tongue"..."Finally a word about the
multipath meter. A separate meter may seem like an extravagance, but
here it is not. This multipath meter is very sensitive and extremely
useful in rotating and antenna for minimum multipath-even
challenging oscilloscopes for utility in this respect. And in a
tuner with such fine sensitivity, quieting, and distortion
characteristics, multipath may well be the limiting performance
factor, particularly in urban areas. A good idea, well executed.
Kensonic has done itself proud with the Accuphase T-100".
Comes with e-copies / pdf
download of the original Accuphase / Kensonic T-100 owners / user /
instruction manual, a review from 1975 and the Accuphase brouchure /
catalog. Can also come with e-copies / pdf download of
the original Accuphase / Kensonic T-100
service manual if the purchaser desires.

The Orion Blue book
states a "Circa" range of 1973-1983. That would be quite a 'long'
span of time for a single model to remain current and I generally
consider the "Orion" guide to be maybe 70-80% accurate, at least up
to the years that I own. I can find the Accuphase T-100 listed in my
"Audio Buyers Guides" and some other Catalogs / buyers guides from
1974 to 1978.
