EMAIL SCAMS & INTERNET SCAMS CRAIGSLIST SCAMS / RIP-OFFS WE HAVE RECEIVED OVER THE YEARS
DON'T FALL FOR THEM!!!

Here we have posted many potential internet scams and email scams, fake emails, CraigsList scam emails / texts, we've recieved, Phishing emails and 'spoof' emails we have received via email. Ok, some of them may not be scams, but they're at least 'spam' as they usually came in to our 'in-box' in 'clusters' and almost always with an attachment. We have had a policy of NEVER opening any attachment, especially without re-contacting the person, maybe by phone to (which usually means it's someone we know) to see if they sent a legitimate email with a legit attachment (and yes, there's the 'obligatory' 'Nigerian-scams'. We also NEVER link to unknown websites included in emails without verifying their legitimacy. Even then, we will usually 're-type' in the web address instead of 'hot linking' FROM the email. DO NOT TRY AND ACCESS ANY OF THESE EMAILS / WEB ADDRESS BELOW AS 'WHO KNOWS' WHAT THEY ARE. In fact, to that end, we have usually changed something in the address so you can't accidently link to any of them. Bottom line is be very careful. We have posted these examples of 'un-solicited' emails that have come into us as 'things to be aware of' and if you received a similar or same one, you should probably do the same thing that we did and that's to
DELETE IT!!!

“Some of these will contain or appear to contain, or appear to originate FROM ‘legitimate’ email address with URL’s FROM legit companies. Heck, we get (call them what you will) ‘scam’ / ‘spam’ / 'fake' / 'spoof' / 'phishing' emails with some of our company URL’s in the ‘FROM’ line, that we had nothing to do with (that will be designated in the following email scams with “our companies name”. Likely any company whose name has been ‘hi-jacked’ or pirated for use in these emails will have no idea that it’s being done, and frankly there’s really nothing that can be done about it that I’m aware of.

The following came in as an email. BTW, he forgot the attachment...
SUBJECT:
I am unable to finish my purchase because of an issue. Please assist me to resolve it quickly.
"Greetings, As a loyal client of your platform, I thought I knew what to anticipate. I a short time ago bought something; however, this time there was a concern. An surprising issue came to my attention when I looked at my bank account summary: the total billed was triple than what was stated on your site. To address this issue, I’ve attached my bank report as proof. I’d appreciate it if you could check this immediately and let me know how we can resolve this matter. Thank you for your prompt attention to this. Yorselis F."

SUBJECT: Typical Craigs list scams / Fradulent ads. This one regarding two Yamaha Jet Skis / Personal Water Craft

#1:

"R955 Yamaha 110 Deluxe U374"

Ad Body Text;

"yamaha vx
w/trailer"

My initial contact / question (obviously realizing it was a scam up front and during Covid-19 outbreak in US, 3/18/20): "Got 3 new rolls of toilet paper and a wad of used I'll trade for them"

Response 1) Re : R955 Yamaha 110 Deluxe U374 "skis is still for sale for the moment . pictures are attached"

Response 2) Re : R955 Yamaha 110 Deluxe U374 "sent pics but the message bounced back. i got an error saying the pictures size is big. send your e mail address and my husband send the pics"

(Obviously these are 'auto-responses' looking to acquire a 'live' email address or contact info).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#2 from same day / hour:

Typical Craigs list scams / Fradulent ads. This one regarding a Sea*doo Bombardier Jet Ski / Personal Water Craft

"Y890 Seadoo F038 - $1750"

Ad Body Text;

"Seadoo
xp
w/trailer"

My initial contact / question (obviously realizing it was a scam up front and during Covid-19 outbreak in US, 3/18/20): "Got a bag of dog poo I'll trade for it"

Response 1) Re : Y890 Seadoo F038 - $1750 "the seadoo ski jets is still for sale $1,750 non negotiable. pictures are attached" (nothing was attached, not that I would have opened it anyway)

Response 2) Re : Y890 Seadoo F038 - $1750 "tried to send pictures but the message bounced back because pics size is big. please give me an mail address to send pictures"

(Obviously these are 'auto-responses' looking to acquire a 'live' email address or contact info).

I wasn't looking for 'jet skis', but merely searching through the 'boats' in my area. The 'scams' almost always 'stand out'.

TEXT FROM LINK YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO CLICK ON (with hyperlink obviously removed);

You don't even need to open the email, just delete it {which is what you should most likely do with any suspicious email}).

File: details_8304024-0.doc (attachment that no doubt holds all kinds of fun viruses and such) BOGUS!!!

Wow, this one I actually had to do a 'double...Ok, "triple" take' on. I did a search on the business (not, "oaktreevintage" as that's me) and it's location did match the area code. Tried to call, but was unsuccessful. We were able to safely open the document, and determine it was someone trying to extort $1300, but did cause us to have to have a closer look. They're getting creative out there in 'criminal scum land'...

We've been getting  A LOT of this 'SPAM' / 'SCAM' email lately in various versions of the following;

While "Costco", "CVS", "Home Depot", "J.C. Penny", "KOHLS", "Sams Club", "Southwest Airlines", "Starbucks", "TJ MAXX, Walmart", are well respected, and long standing companies, their name was ‘hi-jacked’ for these emailed scams. They had nothing to do with this and it has no reflection on any of the following companies….We get a lot of variations on the following.

2) Give us your opinion
3) Redeem your rewards before they expire

Share your opinion and Starbucks experiences by completing the survey and Redeem Your Gift-Card!"

Followed by this 'jiberish',

"REST is easier to maintain - all you have to do is monitor the API documentation for any minute changes to the structure of the REST methods or the structure of the data they return. If you see a change you will just have to manually make the change in your hand-written code which parses the response of the method. With SOAP you have the burden of right-clicking on your reference and selecting "update" and then fixing a few compile errors. (Sarcasm included free of charge.) Josh M. Nov 4 '10 at 18:36...@JoshM: If you've hand-written code to parse the response of a generated response based upon a soft and flexible specification, you're not using REST; you've hardcoded to a resource tree. It's the same as coding to c:\windows\temp or whatever, as opposed to querying for the PROPER location to use. Because it works for a while, doesn't make it the right thing to do, nor is it good coding practice. Paul Sonier Jun 10 '11 at 18:01... @PaulSonier: what's the right way to parse the response FROM what often is a soft and flexible specification? I get that hardcoded brittle code isn't great, but I'm looking for advice or examples on the client end of RESTful APIs and coming up short so far. I think this is what Josh is getting at -- SOAP needs the ton of boilerplate code but what you get for that is a visible and enforceable contract on document format and type safety; RESTful APIs leave out the contract and the boilerplate and often look simple enough it doesn't matter, but... how do you not hardcode to the resource tree? metamatt Nov 17 '11 at 1:51.... (I get the HATEOAS argument, but using, say, ticles/richardsonMaturityModel.html as an example -- there's still a fair amount of semantic interpretation needed, after parsing the XML, before you get to the link elements that are the "hypermedia controls".) metamatt Nov 17 '11 at 1:55..If you dig into advanced features of SOAP (all the WS-* stuff), you'll quickly discover that tools don't support these so well (including EAI and ESB products) and that frameworks can behave differently depending (like Metro vs C#) for subtleties such as "" and null. And the generated boilerplate code is usually only to work around the burden cause by SOAP itself.

WTF!!! Needless to say all BOGUS!!!

I really hope you get this fast. I could not inform anyone about my trip, because it was impromptu. I had to be in donetsk, Ukraine for a program. The program was successful, but my journey has turned sour. I misplaced my wallet and cell phone on my  way back to the hotel i lodge in after i went for sight seeing. The wallet contained all the valuables things i have. Now, my passport is in custody of the hotel management pending when i make payment.
I am sorry if i am inconveniencing you, but i have only very few people  to run to now. i will be indeed very grateful if i can get a loan of  $2,550 FROM you. this will enable me sort our hotel bills and get my sorry self back home. I will really appreciate whatever you can afford in assisting me with. I promise to refund it in full as soon as I return. let me know if you can be of any assistance. Please, let me know soonest. Thanks so much..Henry
(Wow, I really feel sorry for this guy. I’ thinking of overnighting him a money order or some CASH for at least a few hundred dollars to help him out. NOT!)

I hope this email finds you well! (I was 'well' until I read about this persons horrible predicament)

I could not inform everyone about my trip to Manila, Philippines for a program because it was impromptu. The program was successful, but my journey has turned sour I was mugged at gun point and all my valuables were stolen, (cash, bank cards and mobile phone, where I went for sightseeing before leaving to the airport since my return flight is in few hours, quite honestly it was beyond a dreadful experience for me but looking on the bright side I wasn't seriously hurt or injured, I am still alive so that is what's important and luckily I had my passport in my hotel room to get me home. I need your help financially to get back home, I need to settle some outstanding hotel bills and also take a cab to the airport. I am really sorry i am asking this of you, believe me I don't want to ask I would rather take care of it my self but I cant, I have contacted my bank, but the best they can do is to mail a new card which will take 2 to 3 days to get here. All I need right now is $2800, If you can help that would be great and I promise to make the refund once I get back home. Please let me know if I can count on you and I need you to keep checking your email because it's the only way I can reach me.
Sincerely, Bruce B.  – BOGUS!!!

(Yeah, OK, I guess I’d better get some money off to this guy as well…)

While “UPS” is a well respected, and long standing company, their name was ‘hi-jacked’ for this emailed scam. They had nothing to do with this and it has no reflection on “UPS” as a company…. We get a lot of this one.

The only money you will send to them is $265 USD, being the security keeping fee of the company so far, I would have paid that but they said
no because they were not sure of when you will be contacting them for the delivery should incase of demurrage. So contact them right away and
remember to send them their $265 USD for immediate action.

OK, Mr. Jefferson, as soon as I save up another $265 (just sent off a check to another company to get that million bucks ((not sure where I'm going to keep all that money)), I'll get a check off to you....NOT
